ABOUT THIS SECTION
A group of (mostly Bellingham-area) BHS-57 classmates play golf together often and have informal "Golf Tourneys" at years that don't always coincide with the formal BHS-57 Class Reunions' Golf Tournaments. This section shows golfer pictures for the years 2005 - 2007. (See Golfers Gallery 1 pics for years 1992 through 2004.)

This page describes the 2005 Golf Tourney held at two nearby courses in Lewiston ID and Clarkston WA, as reported by Garey Vodopich who biked over there from Bellingham. That same tourney's fun times are described (with more pictures) on page 2, as reported by Darla Mesford O'Malley.

GAREY'S TRIP TO THE 2005 GOLF TOURNEY
In early September, several of the "BHS 1957 Golf Tourney" golfers traveled east, either in groups or individually, to play golf at courses in Lewiston ID and (nearby) Clarkston WA. This is Garey Vodopich's account of that trip.

On Saturday, September 3rd, Garey left Bellingham on his motorcycle, beginning his 1570-mile trip as he headed toward southeast Idaho.

On the way to the tourney, Garey stopped on Monday, September 5th, in Hailey, ID located near Sun Valley in south-central Idaho, due East of Boise and due North of Jerome (not shown on above map) to visit a couple of days with Carol Smith Shanahan and her husband, Les. There, Garey had great fun seeing the sights and doing a lot of "catchup" talking. It had been quite a few years since he'd had the chance to visit with Carol and renew their old friendship, and he enjoyed the time spent there.

On Wednesday, September 7th, Garey continued northward to the tourney location at Lewiston ID and Clarkston WA (both near the ID/WA borders, not far from Pullman - see above map). He checked in for the night and then found part of the group having a few toddies at the nearby RV camp.

Dan & Darla O'Malley, Bill & Karen Stark, and Ron & Ann Cowin had driven over in their motorhomes. Lynn & Vicki Seelye, and David & Jan Lunde also had arrived and were staying at a hotel near the one where John Tiscornia and Garey Vodopich stayed.

On Thursday, September 8th, they had their first golf game. Because there were five people playing, they played a "scramble" game with a dime a point for the longest drive, first on the green, and first in the cup. (Gary Woods took the most points that first game.)

At the clubhouse, they had a bit of scarey excitement. One of BHS-57 group went into insulin shock. Ron Cowin (trained as an EMT) took control and all ended well.

Back at the RV park, John Tiscornia and Garey Vodopich gladly accepted the RVers' invitation to eat steaks with the group, which started another fun evening.

On Friday, September 9th, they had another round of golf at another course which was a great challenge for the duffers because the course didn't have much level ground. You either went uphill or downhill for all holes. The course also included one blind hole. But, it was another great round of golf. (Bill Stark took most of the dimes this time.)

PIC 7: Pictures taken that (gray skies) day include the one of eight golfers, shown below. (Left to Right), they are: Ron Cowin, Bill Stark, Garey Vodopich, Dave Lunde, John Tiscornia, Lynn Seelye, and Gary Woods. (Dan O'Malley is missing from the group picture. Maybe he was taking the picture?)

PIC 9: The following picture shows Lynn Seelye (putting), Ron Cowin (dark shirt, in background), John Tiscornia (yellow jacket).

Running out of time after their golfing fun, they all made a mad dash for the Jet Boat where Barry and Linda Chamberlain also joined the group. The two pictures below show our BHS-57 group on the boat.

PIC 10: In the first picture, taken by Garey Vodopich, from the front to the back of the boat on the LEFT SIDE are: Bill Stark, Karen Stark, Darla and Dan O'Malley, Linda and Barry Chamberlain.

From the front to back on the RIGHT SIDE of the boat are Jan and Dave Lunde, John Tiscornia, Lynn and Vicki Seelye, Ron and Ann Cowin. (Also, see a similar pictures of the boat riders on Page 4 of this Golfers Gallery section.)

PIC 11: The next picture, taken from the back, shows a smiling Kathy and Gary Woods.

The Jet Boat took everyone up the Snake River for dinner. An hour and half later, they enjoyed a prime rib and salmon dinner on the outside patio of the up-river lodge.

Their return down-river ended in somewhat of a damper. The Jet Boat's deckhand jumped from the boat to the dock and missed her expected landing; unfortunately, she fell part on the dock and part in the water. Our BHS-57 hero, Ron Cowin, jumped off the boat and dragged the young lady onto the dock. He knew exactly what to do and quickly had everything under control. The end result for the deckhand was a collar bone cracked in two places and a broken arm.

On Saturday, September 10th, Gary and Kathy Woods held a BBQ for the group at their home in Winchester ID (a bit south on a winding road from Lewiston). Garey didn't attend the BBQ as the weather was changing to rain and he wanted to get an early start on his long motorcycle ride home.

Note: See Page 2 for other 2005 "Golf Tourney" pictures with Darla Mesford O'Malley's report of the fun times they had aside from golfing.

KUDOS: Gary and Kathy Woods did a super job in arranging activities for the group. Everyone had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Perhaps next year, more BHS-57 classmates can participate in this event.
