ABOUT THIS SECTION
This section requires that you understand the concepts of PDF files and the use of Acrobat Reader to download and open PDF files for your online reading, printing, and/or saving. You probably already have Acrobat Reader software on your computer.

For information on PDF files in general and details about how to obtain a free copy of Acrobat Reader, see the Tips and Technical Info section available from the Home page of this BHS-57 web site. You can download Acrobat Reader from the link given there, and then come back here.

However, if you already know about PDFs and Abobe Acrobat Reader, and don't need Adobe's explanation, but just want to download the latest version of the Acrobat Reader software, try this link (and please let me know if this Adobe link is no longer a good one. Marilyn):

CONTENTS OVERVIEW
This section provides one place to store and describe all the BHS-57 web site's PDF files that you can download and open for reading and/or for printing. The PDF files are organized into three Parts, with the newest Part listed first:
Tip Acrobat Reader quickly downloads and opens a PDF file in its own "Acrobat Reader" pop-up window. Use its FILE/PRINT command to print the file on your printer, or use its EDIT/SELECT ALL then use EDIT/COPY to paste the file into a new word processor file on your computer. Close the Acrobat window. To return here for another file download, you may need to use your browser's BACK button.

PART A - BHS ALUMNI PICNIC RESERVATION FORMS (2008 AND 2009)

  1. DOWNLOAD: 2008 Alumni Reunion Picnic Reservation Form   (The BHS 2008 Alumni Reunion Picnic form was postal-mailed by Buck Edwards to BHS-57 classmates in April 2008.)

Didn't get your form in postal mail, or you misplaced it? Need another copy for yourself or a friend? You can download, open, and print the form from here.

Please complete this form and return it to Buck Edwards as soon as you can, so he can include your reservation in the count he must give to the caterer on August 1st, 2008.

  2. DOWNLOAD: Bellingham area Lodging Facilities   (This PDF file shows hotels, motels, inns, RV parks, and campgrounds in the Bellingham area.)

If you are coming from out of town and need lodging facilities, download this file ASAP. (Last updated: 2-16-07 with general text changes, but not with new room rates)

One of the facilities listed on the PDF file, the Hampton Inn was our "designated" hotel for the "Class of 1957" 50th Reunion. Keep in mind when reviewing this PDF that the rates have not been changed on that form from last year (2007) to this year (2008).

This current PDF file is useful only for addesses, telephone numbers, web site URLs, 2007 room rates, and other info provided by the hotels I'd contacted in early 2007. Use the web site URLs and telephone numbers to get further hotel information. The same RV parks (and even one nudist camp) are also again listed for your consideration.

Note:   Please send email to Marilyn with updated rates that you may learn about as well as other Hotel/Motel or RV Parks/Campgound info that classmates may want to stay at which are NOT currently listed on the PDF file. (The PDF file will be updated ASAP if more info becomes available.)

"Thank you for allowing us to interview you at your 50th year reunion for Ballineham High School. Thanks to the great turnout, the DVD is filled with classic interviews and candid close-ups of your classmates. Our camera was on throughout the evening, capturing all the excitement.

We spoke with nearly every classmate as they introduced themselves and shared great memories from their years at Bellingham High. You will also find what everyone's been doing over the years. To enhance the DVD, we've added computer graphics and music from the fifties.

To receive your 2-hour reunion DVD or video, send the form with a check or money order to the addesss on the form or call 1-800-654-8277 and charge it to your Visa. If you are not completely satisfied, we will give you a full refund. Sincerely, Richard Raines."

PART 2 - COOKIES, COMPUTER SECURITY, AND EMAIL SCAMS (2002, 2004)

  1. DOWNLOAD: "Is Your E-mail Watching You?" [2002]   This three-page article by Stefanie Olsen was published in the April 2002 "Cookie-Watch," a bi-monthly NACL newsletter, and emailed to subscriber webmasters whose web sites are NACL-certified to be 100% free of cookies (which includes the BHS Class of 1957 web site). Reprint permission was granted to the BHS-57 webmaster, Marilyn Coughran, by Robert Gywnn, the Founder of NACL (National Anti-Cookie League).

If spam is choking your email In Box, please open this PDF file, print it, and read how spam comes not only from some web sites you may visit, but also may come from some "rich" email that has been encoded in HTML. The article describes how the "web-page-like" HTML email often has hidden cookies placed there by marketers. These kinds of cookies are a lot harder to locate and are used by marketers to track your online moves. You are usually unaware that you are being "bugged" through your email.

You should be particularly cautious about subscribing to online email newsletters and e-zines which are normally sent in HTML (web-page-like) code. Inquire about the publisher's privacy policies regarding the use of hidden cookies to be sure none are attached to the emailed newsletter or e-zine by their advertisers (for example, hidden in the HTML code of banner ads).

[I encourage everyone to read this article about invasive marketing tactics using cookies. Marilyn.]

  2. DOWNLOAD: "Critical Holes in Microsoft" [2002]   This (barely two-page) article by David Becker and Robert Gwynn was published in the July 2002 "Cookie-Watch," the bi-monthly NACL newsletter emailed to subscriber webmasters. Reprint permission was granted to the BHS-57 webmaster, Marilyn Coughran, by Robert Gywnn, the Founder of NACL (National Anti-Cookie League).

This article descibes how Microsoft recently released a patch for a pair of "critical" security holes in its Internet Explorer web browser, but was still investigating a widely publicized vulnerability in its Windows NT and Windows 2000 operating system.

If you are a PC user running version 5 through 6 of Internet Explorer to access the Internet, Microsoft urges you to download the new patch that fixes some flaws they have rated as "critical."

[I strongly advise you to download and read this full article and, if appropriate for your system, to get the patch that Microsoft suggests. Marilyn.]

  3. DOWNLOAD: "E-Mail Scams and Identity Theft" [2004]   Shortly after the beginning of 2004, Earthlink customers received an email requesting that they update their personal account information. The email contained a link to what LOOKED LIKE an Earthlink Web page. However, the message requested information, such as Social Security Number and mother's maiden name, that an ISP shouldn't need to know. The other suspicious thing was that the email was sent from an MSN.com account. Turns out that the email was a "phishing" (pronounced "fishing") scam for the purpose of identity theft.

Protect yourself from email scams. Please download and share this 2-page article with your friends. It was written by Robert Vamosi, Sr. Associate Editor of the ZD-Net web site, and provides detailed information about this scam of Earthlink customers. The article describes how to recognize a scam email, what to do when you receive one, and gives guidelines on how to report it to the FTC.

Robert's 2-page article ends with this important reminder:

"Phishing scams aren't going to go away overnight. And, like it or not, it's up to us to stop them. Just as we've all learned by now not to open e-mail attachments from people we don't know (so as to prevent the spread of viruses), we also need to recognize attempts made by identity thefts to rip us off via e-mail and the Web. Scrutinize every message you get, and don't be quick to give out your personal information. Only when we stop falling for these scams will they finally go away."
