Remember the 45s that we collected and that were played on the jukebox at The Cone which was Bellingham's popular hangout for teens after school, after football games and dances, and on weekends? I found an old 1957 list of the
songs most often played on The Cone's jukebox (at least while I was working there in 1956 and 1957).
I've added some more songs from the 1950s to that list and arranged all the songs in alphabetic order by song title. These are Favorite Fifties Songs of several BHS-57 classmates who sent email to me. Check out the cummulative list and send email to me if your own favorite songs from the fifties are not already listed. |

Speaking of music, remember when transistor radios were first popular? I had a maroon one; it was "big" compared to the small transistor radios of today, plastic-cased, and considered quite modern back in the mid-1950s. Remember the wire recorders that competed with tape recorders for the market? Wire lost, of course. (Or, were wire recorders before the 1950s?) I remember the LPs (also called "33 1/3s") that became popular sometime in the 1950s. I still have a bunch of them, some never played. (I also remember the thick 78s that my sisters and I played on an old wind-up Victrola that we had, but that was back in the 1940s). Oh yeah, I also still have some 8-track cartridges (many also never played). I have no idea what to do with these old things. |

I, Marilyn Moir, remember being excused from school 15 minutes early, so I could get to The Cone and into my white waitress uniform before other teens arrived for sundaes and sodas and burgers or playing music on the jukebox. That was back in the days when you could get a small glass of Coca Cola for a nickel and a large one for a dime.
Another BHS1957 classmate, Karen Smith, also worked at The Cone. And, Joan Felmley (class of 1956) worked with us. My sister, Lillian Moir, (class of 1958) worked at The Cone as well. And my childhood friend, Darla Bartholomew who attended another school, not BHS (and, sadly, who passed away at age 37 after 18 years of critical illness) also worked there with us. Anyone remember us waiting on them? |

Mr. and Mrs. Smith, who owned The Cone, and their son, Ray, made dozens of flavors of their delicious ice cream in the back room. (That was well before Baskin & Robbins, huh?) And, remember that we sold all kinds of nuts (yummy cashews) by the quarter pound and boxes of Russell Stover candy in the front of the store? Hey, does anyone remember the delicious English style (batter fried) fish and chips that we made at the Cone? I recently found The Cone's batter recipe that we made and coated the fish with before deep frying it. (The things I keep!) Remember banana splits? When was the last time you had one of those? What a fun job that was! I still make the best chocolate ice cream sodas and chocolate milkshakes - although I now make milkshakes with my own original hot fudge syrup recipe and throw in a little peanut butter. Yummy! |

If you want to see the really LARGE (511K) picture in a separate pop-up window so you can recognize people, click here. Depending on your monitor settings, you may need to scroll to view it all. (Also, remember to close the pop-up window after viewing it.) I had hand-written the date on the newspaper picture as May 27, 1957. The text that was below the picture in the Bellingham Herald is reprinted in red below:

5. REMEMBER OUR BHS GRADUATION CEREMONY? It's amazing the things that a pack rat keeps in boxes in the garage. If you are interested in seeing the BHS Baccalaureate Service program, click to bring it up in a separate, "pop-up window" and be prepared to scroll. (Also, be sure to close the pop-up window after reading it.) The program is dated Sunday June 2, 1957. (Maybe the reason I kept it because the list of the 27 songs played most often at The Cone was written on the backside of that paper.) |
