Softguide Web Design Services

Since 1996, Marilyn Coughran has created unique web sites for corporations, small businesses, and individuals. Besides web design and programming, she also has done web content writing and editing, web site review and critiques, and user interface testing for small and large corporations.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
Prior to specializing in web site work, Marilyn worked as a software engineer, database developer, technical writer and editor, corporate trainer, marketing and multimedia developer, (and more). As a B2B contractor, she worked for giant international corporations and smaller businesses aross the United States and in other countries.

For her clients, she created databases, technical manuals, online Help systems, and multimedia (sales, educational, B2B) presentations about computer hardware, software, and interfaces for top-level management clients in a wide range of fields including:

  • computer graphics and fontography software houses,
  • telephony hardware and software,
  • air traffic control software,
  • hospital DBMS systems,
  • medical billing systems,
  • mortgage loan processing,
  • CAD/CAM/CAE software,
  • hand-held computers,
  • Internet proxies,
  • Internet protocols,
  • and others.

For several years prior to working for high-tech corporate clients, Marilyn was a college professor of computer-related subjects including:

    • telecommunications,
    • database management systems,
    • several computer programming languages,
    • operating systems for:
      - large mainstream computers
      - mini-computers
      - personal computers
    • data processing,
    • file management,
    • business systems analysis and design,
    • and more.
Prior to college teaching, she worked as a computer programmer and business systems analyst for several years in a variety of corporate business applications. Having worked since age 19 in the high tech field, her breadth and depth of computer experience is unequaled.

    KINDS OF PROJECTS MARILYN LIKES
Marilyn now enjoys creating unique web sites (coding in straight HTML and JavaScript); thus, this web site you are now viewing describes much to do with that kind of project. She also enjoys testing existing web sites to be sure all links work, to find and correct any punctuation, grammar, or spelling errors, or to improve kludgy writing.

She also enjoys creating FileMaker Pro databases as those projects, like web site creation, allow her to combine her artistic graphics arts talents with her technical and communication skills.

And, she still enjoys writing/editing technical manuals (of any size; no project is too difficult for her) or writing/editing newsletters such as marketing newsletters for small businesses/large corporations or newsletters for organization/associations.

Have you some other need that will pique her interest? No project is too large or too small, no challenge is too great, so discuss your current needs with Marilyn if you require services of someone with her wide variety of skills and depth of experience.

To keep her clients costs at a minimum (and to allow her to work strange hours), Marilyn prefer to work out of her own home offices where she has PC and Mac computers with a wide variety of software and peripherals. Although, most of her clients have been located in far-away places where email contact is the norm, meetings and status reports at client offices can be arranged if convenient and required. For example, one Seattle client required her to go to Sofia, Bulgaria for a week to "pick the brains" of software engineers who barely spoke English and to read/edit their engineering specs before coming back to write a 300-page technical manual, to create hundreds of online Help files, and to create a Power Point sales presentation for use by corporate salespersons all over the world.

    CONTACT INFORMATION
If you need a web site designed, created, edited, or tested, please review all other pages of this web site before contacting Marilyn regarding her web site work.

If you need to use Marilyn's other skills and experience, the other pages may not be pertinent, so please contact her via email to describe your specific needs and deadline.

For the fastest reply, please send email stating your needs and timeline. The more specific you can be, the easier it is to provide an accurate estimate of time and costs. If you cannot be specific due to unknown factors, an hourly rate can be agreed upon with a "not to exceed" clause (specified in time or money) in the contract.

In special cases, Marilyn will agree to work double-time to meet "impossible" deadlines.
